It might have been the edge of Empire, home to the furthest flung frontier outposts, but the Romans certainly left a size-12 sandal print on Britain.
And fascination with all things Roman – a rich legacy of buildings, fortifications and art – has certainly stood the test of time.
So, there’s bound to be plenty of interest in a newly revised tour from Archaeology specialist Andante Travels that takes a unique look at aspects of Roman Britain.
Viewed by the Romans themselves as ‘the end of the road’ with horrible weather, the tour will consider how the Roman occupation of Britain worked – and how it famously failed to work in the traumatic Boudican Revolt.
Your guides will be tour leader Oliver Gilkes, a popular and erudite archaeologist, and Lindsey Davis, the award-winning historical novelist behind the Falco and Flavia Albia detective series.
The new six-day tour will take guests on journey through the South of England.
Starting at the British Museum in London, the trip also includes an exclusive tour of the Butser Ancient Farm, exploring the mosaics at the Fishbourne Roman Palace, plus the UNESCO World Heritage bathing complex in Bath (above).
The Falco and Albia’s Britannia with Lindsey Davis tour departs on August 18, 2025 and currently costs £2,795 (saving £200pp) including hotel accommodation on full board basis in London, Portsmouth and Bath, coach transfers throughout, services of expert guide and tour manager, all entrance fees, gratuities and taxes.
