The Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival in Sagres, Algarve takes place from October 1 to 5 this autumn.
The event promises a packed programme of mostly free activities, for all ages and tastes, including, birdwatching and bird-ringing sessions, guided tours, talks and educational workshops, walks and boat trips.
The programme is now live on the festival website, www.birdwatchingsagres.com, and registration for activities will start online from September 1, allowing participants to plan their holidays according to the activities they are most interested in.
The thousands of birds which fly over the Algarve in October, on their way to their wintering grounds, will once again be a highlight of the Festival. Among them are Northern Gannets (as featured as the poster-bird for the event), which on a good day can be seen by the hundreds from Cabo de São Vicente.
Easily identifiable by its long, white wings and pointed bill, this species is an excellent diver, submerging up to 40 metres when it torpedoes into the water to catch the fish it feeds on.
