More to explore at Dynamic Earth this autumn

30th September 2019 By David Pike Leave a Comment

More to explore at Dynamic Earth this autumn – Visitors to Edinburgh’s five star visitor attraction, Dynamic Earth, will get more than they bargained for this October, as a day ticket can be upgraded to an Annual Explorer Pass at no additional cost.

From September 28 to November 3, anyone who buys a full price ticket will be able to enjoy a full year’s visits for free.

To celebrate this special offer, the attraction is hosting a number of exciting activities to interest and excite visitors of all ages. From zooming across the lunar surface on a Virtual Reality moon buggy to hearing from the team behind BBC One’s Blue Planet, there is something to inspire everyone.

Throughout half-term (12 – 20 October), visitors can travel from the deepest depths of the ocean into outer space and beyond, with activities based around deep sea animals as well as the return of the incredibly popular ‘Destination Moon’, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landings.

From 12 until 14 October, the Marine Conservation Society will be running ‘Aliens of the Deep’ wild workshops (10am, 12pm and 2pm daily), showing how deep-sea animals adapt to survive in the depths of the ocean, with an opportunity for young visitors to get creative and design their own ‘alien of the deep’.

Then from 17 – 20 October, visitors will fly from the seabed to the stars, as they take a giant leap back fifty years to the Apollo moon landings with a weekend of excitement. ‘Destination Moon’, a ‘phase’ of activities takes place over four days where  keen space explorers can watch explosive rocket launches, zoom across the lunar surface on a VR moon buggy and even create their own astronaut mission patch badge to take home.

The weekend offers a wonderful opportunity to learn (or revisit!) the epic story of humanity’s first interstellar voyage, through interactive and fun family activities and demos.

One event which is not to be missed is Science behind the Blue Planet, an interactive talk and panel debate by the academic team working on the BBC and The Open University co-production Blue Planet II. Taking place on the evening of 14 October (7pm – 9pm), the talk uses stunning video footage from Blue Planet II, and covers the science of our oceans; the experience of the production process; and how science and discovery were the driving forces behind the award-winning series that captured the nation’s attention.

Eilidh Massie, Marketing Director at Dynamic Earth said: “We’ve got a brilliant line up of events taking place over the autumn. The Destination Moon activities have been a real success in this special anniversary year, and we love seeing what creations our young visitors come up with in the ‘Aliens of the Deep’ workshops!”

As well as the October activities, regular Dynamic Earth features include a 4D cinema, the ever-popular real iceberg, a bone-shaking earthquake and the Deep Time Machine which takes visitors billions of years back in time.

Admission to Dynamic Earth costs £15.95 for an adult, £9.95 for a child, and £13.95 for concessions (students / over 65s).
